Rome, Oct 9 (Agency) Thousands of Italians joined the demonstration of the Italian General Confederation of Labour (CGIL), the most important national trade union, in the center of Rome on Saturday in defense of the country’s constitution, a Sputnik correspondent reported. The event was held under the motto of defending the country’s constitution and gathered participants from all over the country, the correspondent reported. A column of several thousand people dressed in red colors marched from Piazza della Repubblica near the central railway station to Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano.Among the organisers of the demonstration were trade unions, political groups, mainly left-wing, as well as public organizations opposed to Italy’s participation in armed conflicts and the increase in military spending.
The participants of the demonstration were holding banners and placards covering the whole spectrum of the country’s political and social problems, including poverty, labor rights and armed conflicts. CGIL, as well as other unions, demanded that the government take concrete measures to combat insecurity and increase wages and pensions, as well as government spending on healthcare and environmental protection. On Friday, the organisers of the demonstration said they had hoped to gather 100,000 demonstrators in the center of Rome.
