SL to begin IMF negotiations to address debt crisis: president

Colombo, Sep 26 (FN Agency) Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced on Wednesday that the government plans to begin negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) immediately and proceed with activities related to the extended credit facility. In his first address to the nation as president, Dissanayake said Sri Lanka is negotiating with relevant creditors to expedite the process and secure necessary debt relief.

The president expressed confidence in gaining both domestic and international support to secure the necessary debt relief for Sri Lanka. “We are confident that we can gain the support of both the people of this country and the international community, and we believe that through this collective support, we can achieve success,” Dissanayake stated.

He outlined the importance of building a united Sri Lankan nation, with a focus on creating a law-abiding, disciplined society while ensuring social security for all citizens. The president reaffirmed the government’s commitment to public service reform, aiming for a more efficient and honest system that serves the people. The president called for a collective effort from all citizens to create a thriving and diverse nation, while also acknowledging the role of women and individuals with disabilities in shaping Sri Lanka’s future.
