S Korea, US fires ballistic missiles in response to North’s launches

Seoul, June 6 (Agency) Day after North Korea fired eight short-range ballistic missiles, South and the US fired eight ballistic missiles into the East Sea.Yonhap quoted the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) as saying that the allies launched the ground-to-ground Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles starting at 4:45 am on Monday for around 10 minutes. It said, “The South Korea-U.S. combined firing of the ground-to-ground missiles demonstrated the capability and posture to launch immediate precision strikes on the origins of provocations and their command and support forces.

“Our military strongly condemns the North’s series of ballistic missile provocations and seriously urges it to immediately stop acts that raise military tensions on the peninsula and add to security concerns.”On Sunday, North Korea fired eight short-range ballistic missiles towards the East Sea, a day after South Korea and the US ended their joint drills near the peninsular. This was North’s 18th show of force this year and third since President Yoon Suk-yeol took office on May 10. After US President Joe Biden’s trip to Seoul and Tokyo, the North had test-fired on May 25 a suspected new-type ICBM and two apparent short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea.
