Mexico City, May 28 (FN Bureau) Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Monday that he was optimistic Sunday’s general elections would proceed smoothly. “I am very optimistic that people will behave as always, rising to the occasion,” said the president during his daily press conference at the National Palace in Mexico City. “The Mexicans are respectful, good, participatory people,” he said.
“I don’t see anything that could be a cause for concern.” Lopez Obrador, who took office in December 2018, said Mexico is among the countries with the highest salary increases, lower unemployment, and reduced poverty and inequality. The coming electoral process “is more than an election,” he said, adding that it is a referendum in which Mexicans will choose the direction they want the country to go. Sunday’s general elections are considered the largest in Mexico’s modern history, with the presidency, legislative seats, governorships and local government positions up for grabs.
