Macron discusses Ukrainian conflict with Tusk in Poland

Moscow, Dec 13 (FN Agency) French President Emmanuel Macron met with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw on Thursday to discuss the Ukrainian conflict and “open a new chapter” in the French-Polish relations. “We obviously stand aligned in providing support for Ukraine and the Ukrainians during this important phase … Our positions converge in that only a durable peace is possible, meaning that peace should be negotiated by the Ukrainians and allow them to have security solutions in the long run,” Macron told a news conference in Warsaw. Macron stressed that peace in Ukraine could not be negotiated without the Ukrainians or the European Union. He said the EU should work together with the Ukrainians and the Americans to find a solution that would meet security interests of both Ukraine and the EU. “The US will play a new role in the coming weeks and months [in the Ukrainian conflict].

The Trump administration has expressed its intention to try to change the framework of this conflict,” Macron said. Macron held a brief meeting with US President-elect Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris over the weekend. Trump called for an immediate ceasefire and the start of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia after the trilateral meeting. He told NBC News that Kiev might receive a smaller amount of military aid from Washington once he took office.Macron and Tusk were expected to discuss the deployment of peacekeeping forces in Ukraine after the conflict ends, the Politico newspaper reported. Poland is set to assume the EU Council Presidency on January 1, 2025 for a six-month term. Tusk previously stated that Poland’s presidency would play a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape and suggested that peace negotiations on Ukraine could begin as soon as this winter.
