India takes over as Chair of UN Counter Terrorism Committee for 2022

United Nations, Jan 5 (FN Agency) Taking over as Chair of the UN Counter Terrorism Committee for 2022, India said on Wednesday it will make determined efforts to further enhance its role in strengthening the multilateral response to counter terrorism. In a tweet, the Permanent Mission of India to the UN, said: “India will Chair the Counter-Terrorism Committee in 2022. “As Chair, will make determined efforts to further enhance its role in strengthening the multilateral response to counter terrorism.” TS Tirumurti, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, has taken over as Chair of the Counter Terrorism Committee for 2022. The United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate tweeted the news, along with a short bio. “The new Chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee for 2022 is H.E. Mr. T. S. Tirumurti @ambtstirumurti, Permanent Representative and Ambassador @IndiaUNNewYork,” it posted.

The Counter-Terrorism Committee of the United Nations Security Council (UN CTC), comprising all 15 members of the Security Council, was established by Resolution 1373 (2001) on 28 September 2001, in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Acting under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter (concerning threats to international peace and security), the Security Council adopted the resolution to enforce counter-terrorist measures in United Nations Member States. The Committee monitors implementation of resolution 1373 by means of direct dialogue with each Member State. It analyses States’ regular reports to the Committee, and follows up its analysis with responses that identify the areas in which States need to improve in order to achieve full implementation of the resolution. The Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) was established in 2004 to support the Committee in this work. India is a non-permanent member of the 15-nation Security Council and its two-year term ends on December 31, 2022.

On December 31, India voted in favour of a resolution to renew the mandate of the CTC Executive Directorate, and asked nations to remain united against the “tendency of labelling terror acts based on its motivation” and said that such categorisation will lead the global community back to the pre-9/11 era of “my terrorist” versus “your terrorist”. “As the Chair of CTC for 2022, India will make determined efforts to further enhance the role of CTC in strengthening the multilateral response to counter-terrorism, and more importantly, ensuring that global response to the threat of terrorism remains unambiguous, undivided and effective,” India said in its explanation of vote to renew the CTED mandate.
