Georgia sets goal to become EU member by 2030

Tbilisi, June 22 (Agency) Georgia has an ambitious goal to become a member of the European Union by 2030, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said on Friday. “We have a very important national task — to join the European Union. We have an ambitious goal — to make Georgia a member state of the European Union by 2030. Today, our children sang the EU anthem in an unusual way, and I am convinced that the future of these children is in the EU,” Kobakhidze said during a speech in Berlin at a reception dedicated to Georgia’s Independence Day.

The support of partners and countries friendly to Georgia is important for achieving this goal, the prime minister said. In early June, speaker of the Georgian parliament Shalva Papuashvili signed the bill on foreign agents into law, with the document having gone into effect, despite massive street protests and warnings from Western countries. EU Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Herczynski said on Thursday that the adoption of a bill has frozen Georgia’s integration into the EU.
