Extreme heat warning issued in 21 of Japan’s 47 prefectures

Tokyo, July 5 (FN Agency) The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) on Friday issued a warning of heat strokes amid extreme heat in 21 of Japan’s 47 prefectures, including Tokyo. In 19 other prefectures, the WBGT index (Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature), which includes not only temperature but also humidity and the strength of solar radiation, exceeds 31, meaning that any activity can pose a health risk, the agency said, adding that the above-31 index is usually announced at temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit). All this means that the weather in only 7 out of 47 Japanese prefectures remains comfortable and does not pose a risk to life.

“There is a risk of heat stroke and health damage in the areas where an emergency was declared due to extreme heat. Do not think that this does not concern you, and take precautions against the heat,” the agency said in a statement.Extreme heat is persisting in Japan for the third day in a row. Earlier, temperatures in Mie prefecture rose to over 102 degrees Fahrenheit, while Fukui prefecture reported a heat of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures in the prefectures of Hyogo, Shizuoka, and Kochi also ranged around 100 degrees Fahrenheit. In Tokyo, the temperature so far has reached 95 degrees Fahrenheit, which, with 55% humidity, feels like 107 degrees.
