Dhaka, Sep 1 (Agency) The Bangladesh government is going to set up a 6 megawatt power plant in Narayanganj to generate electricity from waste. Agreement has been signed in this regard. On Thursday, PDB signed an agreement with a Chinese company called Consortium of UD Environmental Equipment Technology Company Limited at Sonargaon Hotel in the capital. This center will be established in Jalkuri area of Ward No. 9 under Narayanganj City Corporation. The local government minister was present as the chief guest at the contract signing ceremony. Md. Tajul Islam said, “The Narayanganj project is one of the projects that the Bangladesh government is going to undertake to protect the environment.” This work will be done in municipalities and villages across the country. We have identified 20 to 30 places out of this. State Minister for Power Nasrul Hamid said, ‘The price of the electricity that will be purchased from this center will be around Tk 20 per unit. But we will sell it for 5 to 6 taka. The electricity department will fund this shortfall. The main reason for this is that the Prime Minister wants a specific task for all waste management in the country. Today’s project is due to his interest. He said, Narayanganj will become an environment-friendly and model city after this project. In his welcome speech, PDB Chairman Mahbubur Rahman said, ‘If this center is established, the waste management of Narayanganj will be in a much better position. Electricity will be drawn from this center on a no-payment no-electricity basis. PDB will buy electricity from here at 20.91 cents per unit. The project will be implemented within 455 days after the signing of this agreement.
I hope this work will be completed in due time. Joe Ting Jie, CEO of Consortium of UD Environmental Equipment Technology Company, said, China is working with clean energy in many countries of the world under the ‘Belt in Initiative’. Waste power plant is being set up in Narayanganj today under this project. We hope that Narayanganj will become part of the green project of the whole world under this work of China. Mayor Dr. Salina Hyatt Ivy said, “After a long wait of 11 years we are going to get this center today. For this we have acquired 23 acres of land. 500 tons of garbage will be collected from Narayanganj for this center. If we cannot pay the waste, then we have to pay a fine of 100 rupees. And if they can’t take it, we have to pay 500 taka instead. After the establishment of this center, there will be no more dirt in Narayanganj. Besides, we want to work for the development of Shitalakshya river.” It was said in the event that initially the total cost of the project was 19118.25 lakhs. Later, the cost of the project was first revised to Tk 34591.31 lakh, which was approved in the Ecnec meeting on November 7, 2018. A total of four agreements were signed at the event. These are Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), Implementation Agreement (IA), Land Utilization Agreement (LUA) and Waste Supply Agreement (WSA).
