Verdict hard hits women’s rights: Amber’s side

Los Angeles, June 8 (FN Agency) Johnny Depp has joined the world of social media following his victory in the multi-million dollar defamation case against former wife Amber Heard where he accused her of lying and defaming him in her 2018 op-ed .A spokesperson for the 36 year old Aquaman actress said “As Johnny Depp says he’s ‘moving forward,’ women’s rights are moving backward,” Heard’s spokesperson says in a statement to ET. “The verdict’s message to victims of domestic violence is…be afraid to stand up and speak out.”The statement came in response to the actor’s first Tiktok video which showed the 58-year-old “Pirates of the Caribbean” star waving to fans from his vehicle, playing his guitar onstage and preparing for his performance backstage. “To all of my most treasured, loyal and unwavering supporters. We’ve been everywhere together, we have seen everything together. We have walked the same road together. We did the right thing together, all because you cared. And now, we will all move forward together,” he wrote alongside the clip. “You are, as always, my employers and once again I am whittled down to no way to say thank you, other than just by saying thank you.

So, thank you. My love & respect, JD.” Depp has already amassed 3.6 million followers. The trial taking place over a span of six weeks saw Depp winning the trial with the jury awarding the actor $15 million in damages from Heard, $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. Heard did succeed in one of her three counterclaims, winning over $2 million as part of a compensatory reparation.Heard after the verdict last week, told fans that she was “heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband”. “I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women,” she shared on social media. “It is a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. “It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously. I believe Johnny’s attorneys succeeded in getting the jury to overlook the key issue of Freedom of Speech and ignore evidence that was so conclusive that we won in the UK.”
