Chennai, Mar 31 (Representative) Having acquired the audio rights of Mani Ratnam’s Tamil Ponniyin Selvan 1 & 2, Tips Music (Tips Industries Limited), India’s most loved music label, plans to invest Rs 180-plus crore for the 2023-24 fiscal, which included music rights of big-ticket films in the South. Talking to reporers here today, Kumar Taurani, Managing Director-Tips Industries Ltd., (Music) said the success with PS-1 and other Tamil films has given the company the impetus to focus and strengthen their market in the South in the new financial year. Tips recently launched the music of the upcoming film, PS-2 amidst much fanfare. Talking about the music label’s journey in South, he said, “Tips, which dabbled in non-film music since 1988, entered Hindi film music market in 1988.
We then got into music rights for South films with “Kannathil Muthamittal” (2002).” “Apart from a few more films in Tamil and Telugu. We also acquired two music labels in Telugu market–Kaveri and Swar Sudha. However, we slowed down when the market went bad with the entry of radio, CD and MP3 as well as the rampant piracy then. So, we went back to focussing on Hindi music”, he added. The music industry underwent a new revolution in 2008 with the digital format. “In 2016, music picked up bigtime with the entry of Jio and we decided to tap music in all Indian languages. After the success in Tamil and Telugu music, we will start exploring Kannada and Malayalam music as well”, Mr Kumar Taurani said.
Tips aims to acquire the rights of 10-12 big-ticket Tamil films in 2023-24, which includes releasing one A+ film every quarter. Apart from PS-2, it currently has Ashok Selvan’s movie which has music by Leon James, Mr Taurani said. “One of the factors that draws Tips to a project is quality. One of the reasons for taking on the music rights of PS-1 and Ps-2 is the fact that they were Mani Ratnam projects with music by maestro AR Rahman”, he said. “We are in no hurry to acquire films in terms of numbers, we just want quality music and sound”, he said, adding, Tips Music boasts of vast music catalogue of over 30,000 tracks and 5,500 albums spanning 24 languages.
