It’s beautiful to be ‘typecast’: Sunil Grover

New Delhi, Apr 10 (FN Agency) Actor and comedian Sunil Grover, who is seen playing ‘Tango’ in the slice of life comedy series ‘United Kacche’, feels that it’s a beautiful and nice thing to be ‘typecast’, because people have accepted you and want to see more of you. ‘United Kacche’ revolves around the lives of Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis who are living in England as illegal immigrants and are thus known as Kachche. In an interaction with UNI, Sunil talks about the show, his role, comic genre, typecasting and more. Asked If it bothers him to be typecast in a certain kind of role/genre, Sunil said,”This question has come at various points in my career. And I think there is nothing wrong with it if people typecast you, it’s a beautiful thing. People have accepted you and want to see more of you. It’s nice to be typecast. because people are liking what you are doing. In my case I have been typecast at various junctions of my life. But I have also been lucky that people accepted me in different kinds of roles.”

“People accepted me in comic roles, while they also accepted me in ‘Tandav’. So it was big achievement for me as people were not laughing at me during my serious scenes in ‘Tandav’. Then came ‘Sunflower’, and now this role is completely different from ‘Sunflower’, because of the humour and the character it is. I feel lucky that I have been offered such roles where I am exploring another mindset. So that’s what I want to do, and that’s what I like to do,” he said. On what made him say yes to the show, the 45-year-old actor said, “The concept of shooting it abroad in the UK, and a sitcom like this on illegal immigrants based in London, the idea actually excited me. No sitcom has been made like this.” Talking about the responsibility to portray a serious issue in a humorous manner, Sunil said,”what matters is how delicately it is written. The objective is to show their life, in a satirical way, and also to generate humour.

In this way the topic reaches more people and it is enjoyable. There were challenges, but that were tackled well by the writers, and director of the show.” On his character Tango, Sunil said, “my only concern was to make it relevant, and I tried to get people to accept me in this avatar. This show has one certain kind of humour, so I could say those things, keeping the empathy towards the character intact. I have taken back the innocence of Tango. He doesn’t think too much before doing anything. Whenever he is in self doubt he gets influenced, but getting influenced is also a kind of innocence. He is sometimes mischievous also. I also like to celebrate wherever I am, like Tango.” The ‘Goodbye’ fame actor said that OTT is great as “we are getting to explore various characters. OTT portrays all kinds of stories which might not be shown on other mediums. There is so much variety here that you get to see.” On why ‘United Kacche’ must be on your watchlist, Sunil said, “it’s funny, people can relate to the story and the journey of the people shown in it. it’s an easy watch, which will relax you for sure.” On the work front, Sunil has ‘Jawan’ and ‘Sunflower 2’ in his kitty. ‘United Kacche’ also stars Manu Rishi, Sapna Pabbi, Satish Shah, Nayani Dixitt, Neelu Kohli and Diksha Juneja. It is produced by Yoodlee Films and directed by Manav Shah and Dharampal Thakur.
