Imphal, Sep 7 (Agency) Troops seized smuggled goods in the Manipur border area worth about Rs 20.40 cr. A militant was also nabbed in the border area, according to Assam rifles official. Assam Rifles official said on Thursday that 1,700 bags, each weighing 100 kilograms of suspected Areca Nuts (Supari) with an estimated value of about Rs. 20.40 Crore were discovered being illicitly transported in seven trucks in the Manipur Myanmar border area. This smuggling operation was intercepted in the general vicinity of Phaikoh village, near Border Post-102 (RN 039796), as it attempted to cross the international border into Indian territory.
All the seized Areca Nuts, along with the apprehended individuals and the trucks used for smuggling, were handed over to the Forest Department in Kamjong on Wednesday to facilitate further legal proceedings. In another incident on Wednesday Assam Rifles personnel apprehended a person allegedly a cadre of Manipur based militant outfit near Moreh, situated along the Indo-Myanmar Border (IMB) within the state of Manipur. The apprehended individual was handed over to the custody of the Moreh Police Station to facilitate further investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.
