SC to hear Kolkata doctor’s case on Aug 20

New Delhi, Aug 19 (FN Bureau) The Supreme Court on its own initiative on Sunday took cognizance of the rape and murder of a doctor in R G Kar Hospital in Kolkata and decided to take up the matter on Aug 20. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, Justice J B Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra have decided to hear the matter which has sparked public outrage across the country.

The body of a post-graduate trainee doctor was found in the hospital August 9. The Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer the next day in this connection. On August 13, the Calcutta High Court, expressing lack of satisfaction with the Kolkata Police probe, had directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the investigation after the victim’s parents expressed fears of tampering with thee evidence.
