New Delhi, July 20 (Bureau) The Union Health Ministry swung into the action concerning the tragic incident where a 30-year-old woman was forced to deliver a child outside a government hospital after she was allegedly not admitted there. The Union Ministry directed the administration of Centre-run hospital, where the incident was reported, to debar five doctors and one intern from performing their duties. Meanwhile, a professor and Chief Medical Officer from the Obgynae department of the hospital were served showcause notices asking their reply in 24 hours about “why a disciplinary action may not be initiated against them.”
The Union Ministry said the punitive action came under the directions of Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya after a team from the ministry probed the matter. The unfortunate incident was captured in a video which showed the woman delivering child in the open on the roadside outside the labour room of Safdarjung hospital on Tuesday morning after she was allegedly not allowed admission to the hospital. The video has gone viral on social media. The video showed a few women made a veil with saris to cover the patient who delivered a child while dozens of people watched as bystanders.
The video also showed a nurse came running from a hospital ward as the patient kept screaming and went inside with the newborn born child. The presence of dustbins and blood can be noticed on the floor where the woman was seen delivering the child. The video was shot by two women who had come to the hospital and spotted the women in labour pain. According to them, the patient is 30-year-old and came from Dadri district in an emergency on Monday. However, the patient was denied admission to the hospital and was lying outside the gynaecology ward for the whole Monday night, one of the women who shot the video claimed. Meanwhile, the hospital has issued a statement on the unfortunate incident. The hospital administration said that the patient and her child are now admitted to the gynaecology ward under the supervision of a team of six doctors.
Both mother and child are said to be in stable condition. However, the hospital administration refused to take any responsibility for the incident and blamed the patient for the incident instead. “She (patient) was examined by the SR (Senior Resident Doctor) at 5:45 pm on 18.07.2022 and her condition was found to be 33+6 weeks gestation with preeclampsia in early labour. The patient was offered admission but she did not return with the admission paper,” the statement read. Meanwhile, the Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) has taken a suo moto cognizance of the incident. DCW Chief Swati Maliwal has issued a notice to Safdarjung’s Medical Superintendent asking for a detailed report on the matter.
