Reckless driving will be non-bailable offence: Shinde

Mumbai May 16 (FN Bureau): A review meeting was held under the chairmanship of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday regarding the filing of non-bailable cases against drivers of public transport services who drive recklessly without a license and drink alcohol. On the lines of Himachal Pradesh, Shinde instructed officials to take strict legal actionso that passengers do not lose their lives due to the negligence of drivers. Director General of Police Rajnish Seth, Principal Secretary of Home Department, Additional Director General of Police Transport Ravindra Singhal, Commissioner of Transport Vivek Bhimanwar and others were present in this meeting held at Sahyadri Guest House.

Reckless and drunken driving has increased the number of accidents and the death of innocent passengers. In 2021, the number of accidents due to speeding is 20 thousand 860 and 9829 people died, he added. The meeting discussed the Home Department’s proposal to make reckless driving on public roads a non-bailable offence. Strict action is expected to be taken against drivers for accidents and deaths of passengers due to negligence.
