Police raid in ex LF minister’s house in Agartala triggers row

Agartala, Jul 9 (Agency) Sudden police raid in the houses of former left front minister and veteran CPI-M leader Pabitra Kar in two locations of the city in connection with a case of having disproportionate assets has sparked a serious reaction in the opposition circle. Accusing the ruling BJP-IPFT government of persuading political vendetta to malign the senior leaders of CPI-M, the party threatened to launch a statewide movement against police harassment of their leaders based on false and fabricated cases. The CPI-M leader Amal Chakraborty alleged that the Biplab Kumar Deb government harassing the politicians of the state including his party people would not allow it to go on. Earlier, veteran CPI-M leader Badal Choudhury had been in jail for three months on the charge of Rs 600 Cr corruption in the PWD department during his tenure.

Recently, police harassed three senior CPI-M leaders – Bijan Dhar, Bhanu Lal Saha and Jitendra Chowdhury for their Facebook post advising the party cadres to resist the violent attacks of BJP goons, he stated. The journalists, social activists, ministers and MLAs of the ruling party even the BJP leaders who have been opposing the vendetta politics of Biplab Kumar Deb and criticizing the misrule have been facing harassment and physical attacks across the state but the police didn’t take any action against the criminals in any of the cases. Senior-most minister of state N C Debbarma was attacked in his own constituency a month ago, Chief Minister didn’t utter a single word against it, which clearly indicated why these are happening.

According to the report, a large number of police led by DSP Piya Madhuri Majumdar conducted raids in his house at Ramnagar in the city early in the morning. The similar, raid was also conducted at the same time in his parental house in the eastern part of the city Khayerpur. Kar alleged they stormed into the houses without any permission and prior intimation and when they objected to it, police misbehaved with them including the women in the family. “Police ransacked both the houses for a long time but didn’t provide us with any recovery list. Many valuable items and important documents were found missing after the raid and I am surprised how such an illegal operation police can do based on a false case. However, we shall take shelter of law and the people of Tripura will decide the fate of this government,” said a family member of Kar.
