Passenger held with foreign currency at Delhi Airport

New Delhi, May 30 (Agency) Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) seized foreign currency worth Rs 40 lakh from a passenger at Delhi’s IGI Airport, here on Monday. According to the CISF, on the basis of behavior detection, surveillance and intelligence the staff noticed suspicious activities of a passenger at the Check-In area near “H” row of IGI Airport. The passenger, identified as Mohd Harun (31), was travelling to Dubai. On suspicion, he was diverted to a random checking point for thorough checking of his luggage. When two of his bags were checked through X-BIS machine, some foreign currency concealed “inside the cover of four notebooks” kept in one of his check-in baggage was found, said the CISF. Thereafter, the passenger was allowed to complete the check-in formalities and was kept under close watch through physical and electronic measures.

The matter was also informed to the senior officers of CISF and Customs officials. After clearing the Check-in process by the passenger, the airline was requested to hold his check-in baggage. As the passenger cleared his immigration formalities, he was intercepted by the CISF surveillance and intelligence staff. The passenger along with his checked-in baggage was brought to the Departure Customs office, where on physical checking of his check- in bag, four note books were found. On close scrutiny of the notebooks, it was noticed that something was concealed in between the cover and the pasted pages. On being opened the adjoined cover and pages, it was noticed that 2,00,000 Saudi Riyals, 200 US Dollars and 170 Dirhams worth Rs 40 lakh in Indian currency were concealed in four note books to avoid detection. On inquiry, he could not produce valid documents to carry such a huge amount of foreign currency. The passenger along with the foreign currency was handed over to the custom officials for further action.
