NHRC notice to DG Prisons Bihar over poor food quality in jails

New Delhi, July 25 (Representative) The National Human Rights Commission ( NHRC) on Monday issued a notice to Director General of Prisons, Bihar over alleged poor quality of food being served in jails in the state. The Commission took suo motu cognizance of a media report that poor quality of food is being served to the prisoners in Begusarai Jail, Bihar, the NHRC statement stated.

The Commission issued the notice and sought a report within six weeks. Besides the quality of food, the report should also include the status of other basic facilities for the prisoners in the other jails of the State, it stated. According to the media report, the matter came to notice when a prisoner, lodged in the Begusarai Jail, approached the Secretary, District Legal Services Authority.
