Kapurthala police busts Nepal-linked drug racket

Phagwara, Aug 2 (Agency) The district police busted an international drug racket that was operating in India and Nepal and was involved in ganja smuggling. The police have arrested three persons besides seizing 15 kgs of puppy husk (ganja) from their possession. The arrested accused have been identified as Avtar Singh of Bhagalpur, Bihar now living in Ashok Nagar (Jalandhar), Lakhwinder Singh alias Gora and Gurpreet Singh of Chhota Surtanpur, Chamkaur Sahib, Rupnagar. Divulging details regarding the arrest on Monday, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh said that several teams were formed under the supervision Phagwara SP Sarbjeet Singh Bahia along with DSP Paramjit Singh to keep a vigil on the activities of anti-social elements in the district.

The SSP said that on tip-off, a police party led by CIA Staff head Inspector Sikander Singh, ASI Paramjit Singh along with police party which was patrolling near Phagwara bypass stopped a private passenger bus coming towards SBS Nagar (Nawanshahar) and seized 15 kgs of ganja hidden in a plastic packets being carried by the accused in the bus. The police team arrested the three of them and registered a case against them under relevant sections of the NDPS Act. Mr Khakh said that during preliminary investigations, it has come to fore that the consignment of the drug was being smuggled from Nepal and the three of them had links with peddlers of Nepal and Bihar. The accused confessed that this drug (Ganja) came from Nepal to India into this district which is just 200-kms away from international boundary, he added. The SSP said that the arrested smugglers would be produced before the magistrate by the police and police remand of them would be sought to further investigate the matter and trace their links and possible accomplices. “We would bust the entire supply line and each and every person involved in the network would be arrested,” added the SSP.
