Heroin, liquor worth over Rs One crore seized in poll-bound Meghalaya

Shillong, Jan 19 (Agency) Meghalaya police have seized drugs and liquor worth over Rs. one crore after model code of conduct came into force in Meghalaya following the announcement of the Assembly elections on Wednesday, a poll official said on Thursday. Police said two high-profile drug traffickers were arrested by the anti-narcotics task force at Byrnihat area in Ri-Bhoi district on Wednesday based on credible information that they are transporting heroin from Manipur to Meghalaya’s state capital Shillong via Assam.

“Twenty soap boxes containing heroin with an estimated international market value of Rs 1.2 crores were recovered from Abigail Vanpari Vanchhawng and Rintu Chanshyam Saikia,” police said, adding that one car, two mobile phones and one ATM card were among the other items seized by the police in the well-synchronised operation. Vanchhawng is a resident of Nongrim Hills in the state capital Shillong, while Saikia is from Chincholoi Bunder Road, Malad West, Mumbai, Maharashtra. Meanwhile, police seized 3785.03 litresof liquor worth over Rs 10 lakh in South Garo Hills district.
