New Delhi, Sep 5 (Agency) Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police on Sunday arrested four men for allegedly being involved in insurance fraud, specially targeting army officials. According to the police, over 54 army officers were targeted and cheated to the tune of Rs 1.15 crore. The accused were involved in many cases of similar fraud in various states – Maharashtra, Chennai, Hyderabad and Chandigarh. The accused had a modus operandi to dupe the army personnel in which fraudsters allegedly used to make phone calls to the pensioners or next of kin by promising them large sums of money in the range of Rs 3-4 Lakh from Army Group Insurance Fund (AGIF) and demanded amounts of Rs 30-40 thousands in advance in bank accounts as processing fee for releasing the funds.
For this purpose, the premises were taken on rent and after registration of the bogus firms and opening of bank accounts on such addresses, they would vacate the premises. With the help of technical surveillance, four men, Prabhat Kumar, Raj Rajput alias Rupesh, Ram Naresh and Ram Sagar, were arrested from different locations of Delhi, Faridabad and Kanpur. Sagar and Naresh had opened more than 50 bank accounts in different banks and in different areas of NCR and Guwahati. Both used only addresses of rented premises. Accused, Naresh, was earlier arrested in a theft case in Rai Bareli, he came in contact with Rupesh and joined him in his activities, said RK Singh, Additional Commissioner of Police.
