DCW rescues a 13-year-old being forced to work as domestic help

New Delhi, May 16 (Agency) Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Monday rescued a 13-year old orphan girl who was being inhumanely treated and forced to work as a domestic help in Delhi’s GTB Nagar The Commission received the information about the matter through an anonymous source on its 181 Women’s Helpline number. The caller informed the body about the plight of the minor girl who was being forced to work as a domestic help and was being ill treated and beaten up regularly by the family, DCW, in a statement, said. After receiving the call, the DCW team immediately reached the spot along with Delhi Police for rescuing the girl, but faced tremendous resistance from the family who tried to conceal the matter. Ultimately with efforts of the Commission and the Police, the girl was rescued who then informed the Commission about the alleged inhumane treatment meted upon her by her employers.

DCW Chief Swati Maliwal said “It’s very upsetting that more and more incidents of child labour and brutality are coming up in Delhi. Exemplary action must be taken against everyone involved in the matter.” The girl informed the Commission that she is an orphan and has two sisters. She is from Uttarakhand and was allegedly forced to work as a domestic help in Delhi from the past four years without any payment. The employers did not allow her to meet her family. Even when her mother died two years ago, she was not allowed to attend her last rites. She was made to do household work the entire day and was allegedly beaten up and abused at the smallest pretext by the family. Taking serious note of the matter, the DCW sought immediate registration of an FIR and arrests in the matter. “Her wages should be recovered and she should be rehabilitated by the Child Welfare Committee. We will do everything possible to help her,” Maliwal added.
