New Delhi, July 22 (FN Agency) Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on Friday detected a high volume of foreign currency worth Rs 1.24 crore at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, New Delhi. On the basis of behavior detection, CISF surveillance staff noticed suspicious activities of a passenger, identified as Deepak Kumar Maharaj, at Check-In area, Terminal-3, said CISF. On suspicion, he was diverted to a random checking point for thorough checking of his luggage. During checking through the X-BIS machine, some currency concealed in the ‘False Bottom’ of his bag was noticed by the CISF personnel. Following this the passenger was allowed to complete the check-in formalities and was kept under close watch through physical and electronic measures.
As the passenger cleared the check-in and immigration formalities, he was intercepted by CISF surveillance and intelligence staff. He along with his hand bag was brought to the Departure Customs office, where 1,54,500 USD and 5000 Thai Baht, worth Rs 1.24 crores was recovered from him, which was concealed in the false bottom of the bag to avoid detection, said CISF. On enquiry, he could not produce valid documents for carrying such a volume of foreign currency. The passenger along with the detected amount was handed over to Custom officials for further action in the matter.
