CBI gets 8-day custody of Sandip Ghosh in Kolkata hospital financial scam

Kolkata, Sep 3 (Agency) A Special Court in Kolkata on Tuesday remanded RG Kar Hospital’s former principal Sandip Ghosh to Central Bureau of Investigation custody for eight days in connection with alleged financial scam in the institute since 2021, court sources said. Ghosh and three other arrested accused, including former principal’s private security man Afsar Ali Khan and two vendors, were presented before the Special CBI court in Alipore, which remanded the four accused to 8 days’ CBI custody. The CBI counsel had sought 10-day custody of the accused, sources added.

The CBI counsel told the court that there was a large-scale nexus that needed to be probed and exposed, and hence their interrogation was needed further to unravel the truth behind the alleged scandal. The anti-corruption branch of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had arrested Ghosh and three others on Monday evening. Those arrested include Afsar Ali Khan, “personal bouncer” of Ghosh, and two vendors – Biplav Singha and Suman Hazara – who used to supply materials to the hospital. Khan’s name came after a video went viral in which he was making claims about his connection to the highest power of the corridor. The hospital’s former deputy superintendent Dr Akhtar Ali had lodged complaints of financial irregularities on multiple counts at the establishment during Ghosh’s tenure as principal since 2021.
