2.59 kg gold worth Rs.1.12 cr seized at airport, one passenger, two receivers arrested

Chennai, Nov 29 (Agency) Officials of the Customs Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) today seized 2.59 kg gold valued at Rs 1.12 crore from a passenger who arrived from Abu Dhabi and arrested him and two others, who came to receive it at the Anna International airport here today. A press release from the Office of the Commissioner of Customs said based on specific inputs, a 24-year-old person from Ramanathapuram, who arrived from Abu Dhabi by an Etihad Airways flight was intercepted by the AIU officers. On examination of his checked-in baggage, one cylindrical shaped gold ingot was concealed in coffee maker.

The gold ingot weighed 2.59 kg and was valued at Rs. 1.12 crores. The same was recovered and seized under the Customs Act, 1962. The passenger and two receivers, who came to collect the smuggled gold, were arrested. Further investigation is under progress.
