Chennai, June 25 (FN Agency) In a major haul, officials of the Customs Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) have seized 12.095 kg of gold valued at Rs. 7.58 crore at the Anna International airport and arrested ten passengers, who arrived from Dubai and Abu Dhabi on Monday. An official release here today said on the basis of specific intelligence developed by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), 10 passengers who arrived from Dubai and Abu Dhabi, were intercepted by the AIU officers. Upon examination and search of their person and body, 10 Gold chains of 24K purity totally weighing 4.645 Kgs were found concealed in their socks and under garments. Gold in paste form was also found concealed in their under garments as well as in rectum as body concealment. The total value of 10 chains recovered was Rs.2.91 crores.
The total weight of the gold retrieved from the smuggled gold paste is 7.45 kgs and the value is Rs.4.67 crores. The same were seized under the customs act 1962. All the 10 passengers were arrested and produced before the District Court Judge at Alandur and remanded in judicial custody. They were lodged in Puzhal Central Prison. Further investigation is under progress in these cases.
