10-member SIT to probe Vivek Vihar incident

New Delhi, Jan 29 (Agency) Three days after a 20-year-old woman was allegedly abducted, sexually assaulted, face blackened and paraded on East Delhi’s Kasturba Nagar street near Vivek Vihar, police has formed a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) under an Assistant Commissioner of Police rank officer, to ensure speedy and proper investigation of the crime. One more accused, a juvenile, was apprehended today. Twelve people, including eight women and three juveniles, have been apprehended so far in this case. Eleven people were named in the FIR.

The vehicle, which was allegedly used in the crime, has also been recovered, the Delhi police said. Police had arrested seven women and two juveniles on Thursday and two people on Friday in this case. The video clips, which were recorded during the incident, have been scanned and police were trying to identify the people allegedly involved in this incident. Some more people were likely to be arrested in the coming days. A senior police official said that a total 12 accused, including three juveniles, have been apprehended so far. It was learnt that three days ago, a 20-year-old woman’s head was shaved, her face blackened and she was paraded with a garland of shoes at Kasturba Nagar near Vivek Vihar.

The shocking incident took place on Wednesday. Police swung into action after a video clip of the incident went viral on social media, showing several persons surrounding the woman and thrashing her, even as some others hurled abuses. Police tweeted, “Delhi Police appeals to everyone not to share the alleged video of the incident, as it amounts to breaching the identity and dignity of the victim. This is insensitive and against the law and attracts penal action.” Earlier, Delhi Police had said in a tweet that a woman was sexually attacked in Shahdara district and that police were providing all possible help to the victim. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted on this matter and said this was very ‘shameful’. “How did the criminals get so courageous? I urge the Union Home Minister and the Lieutenant Governor to instruct the police to take strict action, pay attention to the law and order situation. Delhiites will not tolerate such heinous crime and criminals at any cost,” he added.
