Till year 2023-24, coal consumers won’t need to import coal for power generation

Nagpur, Feb 16 (Agency) By the year 2023-24, coal consumers will not need to import coal for power generation as Coal India is moving towards meeting their needs with the coal produced in the country, Dr Anil Kumar Jain, secretary, Ministry of Coal, Government of India, said on Tuesday. Speaking to media here, he said, “Coal India is committed to supply energy as per the aspirations of the country.” He also said that in the next financial year, Coal India will achieve the target of 700 million tonnes of coal production.
Jain further suggested that the Western Coalfield Limited (WCL) should be prepared to use the new technology to further contribute to the nation’s energy needs as well as explore other potential for profitability. He asked the company personnel to achieve their production target in the remaining days of this financial year. He also emphasized on human resource skills development training. After reviewing the performance of WCL at the company headquarters here, the coal secretary appreciated the planting of trees by WCL to save environment. In the review meeting, Manoj Kumar, chairman-cum-managing director (CMD) of WCL, gave details of various activities of the company. Earlier, Dr Jain held meetings with representatives of major power manufacturers Mahagenco, MPGCL, NTPC, Gujarat Power, Adani Power, GMR.
