Chennai, 12 (Representative) “South India’s food processing sector is on the cusp of a revolution, with innovative segments like millets, ready-to-eat, and plant-based dairy alternatives unlocking a treasure trove of economic opportunities for farmers”, a report by CII-Danfoss said. The CII FACE (The Confederation of Indian Industry – Food and Agriculture Centre of Excellence) supported by Danfoss India, titled, “Food Processing Sector in India – Potential for Southern States” was launched during the 15th edition of CII FoodPro 2024 held here from August 9 to 11. The Food Pro ’24 was a premier event covering F&B, Agriculture, Agri-tech, Cold Chain, and Refrigeration. According to the newly launched report, technology holds the key to supercharging this growth, ensuring the highest standards of safety and quality, and propelling India’s exports onto the global stage, a Danfoss release said on Monday. The report carries insights on emerging trends, technologies and export opportunities, enabling businesses to make informed decisions and tap into the sector’s potential. Additionally, it highlights the strengths and challenges of each southern state, allowing them to tailor their strategies and leverage their unique advantages.

The key highlights of the report said India’s food sector is transforming, driven by global reforms, with the processing industry evolving through improved policies and global standard harmonization India’s food processing industry sees innovative startups emerging with cutting-edge tech. The domestic food market expected to grow by over 47% from 2022 figures, reaching USD 1,274 billion by 2027. A special focus on the potential that southern states hold for food processing is being laid out in the report State-wise. The report also said Tamil Nadu leads India’s export of processed fruits, juices, and nuts, with a 33% share by quantity and 27% by value, exporting 208,370 MT worth USD 220.81 million in 2023-24.
The report was launched by Ms Apoorva Principal Secretary and Agricultural Production Commissioner, Government of Tamil Nadu, Kerala Minister for Law, Industries and Coir P. Rajeev, Commissioner of Industries, Commerce and Exports, and CEO, AP Food Processing Society, Sreedhar Cherukuri and in the presence of Mr. Ravichandran Purushothaman, CII members, and other dignitaries. This event also witnessed the unveiling of the new Danfoss Optyma Pack Condensing Unit, a reliable and energy-efficient solution for Bulk Milk Cooling and Cold Room applications. This innovative technology ensures optimal milk temperatures with minimized energy consumption, which brings down the carbon footprint, addressing critical dairy processing challenges and supporting India’s sustainable food production goals.
