Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 23 (Representative) The smart waste bin project developed by students of Mar Baselios College of Engineering in the city has won the first prize in the 13th CSI InApp International Student Project Awards, organised by Technopark-based InApp Information Technologies, here. The objective of CSI-InApp Awards, jointly instituted by InApp, Computer Society of India (CSI) Trivandrum Chapter and APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU), is to provide a challenging and creative ground for college students to showcase their skills in software development. InApp, a full-cycle software development company, has been functioning in Technopark for the last 25 years. The smart waste bin project conceived by Bryan Bishi, Abraham AV, and Jins K Varghese of Mar Baselios College of Engineering received the award at a function held at Travancore Hall, Technopark here.
Satish Babu, Chair of APRALO, Former ICANN NomCom Member, Past President of CSI, and Board Member at InApp, was the Guest of Honour on the occasion. The ceremony saw confluence of a clutch of industry leaders, academicians, and budding technologists. Safesteps sentinel – child safety gadget developed by the team comprising Joel K James, Ms Meriel Rebecca Koshy, Mohammed Fawas MP, and Ms Richa Rollad from Saintgits College of Engineering, Kottayam, won the second prize. The third prize was given away to the concept of tuberculosis detection using deep learning models on microscopic images by Rohit Jindal and Shivansh Gupta of Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, Tamil Nadu. More than 200 project abstracts were submitted by college students worldwide for the awards since February 2024. After a rigorous month-long evaluation by a distinguished panel of judges, 55 projects were selected for the second round.
In August, the second round of evaluation was conducted online, featuring a panel of experts with diverse technological expertise. Then the list of teams was winnowed down to nine teams who advanced to the grand finale, which was held virtually. The finale was live-streamed on the CSI InApp Awards’ YouTube channel under the supervision of a panel of industrial experts. Finally, top three projects were selected for their innovation, impact, and technical excellence.
