Sensex ends up 54.81 pts

Mumbai, Sep 9 (Bureau) Snapping a losing streak of the last two sessions, the BSE Sensex on Thursday rose by 54.81 pts to close at 58,305.07 following gains in Telecom, Utilities, Power and Capital Goods stocks. The Nifty too improved by 15.75 pts at 17,369.25. The day opened at 58,172.98, down by 78 pts. It was dropped 166 pts to 58,084.99, the days low. Later, it managed to erase the earlier losses and advanced nearly 84 pts to 58,334.59, the days high before closing at 58,305.07, rising by 54.81 pts from its previous close. The Sensex registered the days high and low at 58,334.59 and 58,084.99 pts respectively.

The Nifty recorded the days high and low at 17,379.65 and 17,302.70 pts respectively. The sectoral indices that pushed the market up were Telecom, Utilities, Power and Capital Goods stocks. The scrips that went up were Bharti Airtel, a major gainer up by 2.77 per cent to Rs 686.30 followed by Nestle India, Tata Steel, Bajaj Finserv and HCL Technology. However, selling in Titan, Ultracemco, Bajaj Auto, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank capped further gains, brokers said. The Mid Cap increased by 0.56 per cent and Small Cap by 0.52 per cent. In 30 scrips, 18 advanced while 12 declined. The stock market will be closed tomorrow on account of ‘Ganesh Chaturthi’, brokers informed.
