Bengaluru / New Delhi, Aug 17 (Bureau) The transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare and life sciences is rapidly gaining recognition, and Sanjeev Malhotra, CEO of MeitY NASSCOM CoE, is at the forefront of this revolution. Malhotra envisions a future where AI significantly enhances diagnostic efficiency, personalizes patient care, accelerates drug discovery, and optimizes operations across the sector. In his recent address, Malhotra underscored the key steps required to fully unlock AI’s potential. “Diagnostics will become more efficient, care will be personalized, drug discovery cycles will be shortened, and operations will be optimized,” he asserted. He emphasized that achieving these benefits necessitates fostering collaboration, reducing barriers to data availability, and maintaining the highest standards of ethics and security. AI’s transformative impact is already observable through innovations such as AI-powered eye care devices produced in Karnataka, which are now reaching global markets.
These devices highlight AI’s potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy and broaden access to advanced care. Furthermore, advancements in radiology imaging demonstrate AI’s ability to refine diagnostics and treatment strategies. Despite these promising developments, a recent NASSCOM Insights report presented at the 13th Lifesciences and Healthcare Forum (LHIF) reveals that the sector’s adoption of AI remains cautious. The report shows that 44% of healthcare companies have identified AI use cases, recognizing its potential to improve diagnostics and streamline administrative processes. However, the journey from identifying AI’s potential to fully integrating it into daily operations is proving to be slow. The report notes that while 43% of companies have initiated pilot projects to test AI’s effectiveness, only 38% have successfully incorporated AI solutions into their operations.
This gap highlights significant challenges, including concerns about data security, regulatory compliance, and the need for robust infrastructure. At the LHIF, industry experts echoed Malhotra’s call for continued investment and strategic planning. Srini Mahalingam, Vice President of Customer Success – Healthcare at GAVS Technologies, emphasized, “AI is poised to revolutionize healthcare, but its adoption requires careful planning and execution. Companies must navigate the risks while capitalizing on the opportunities.” The NASSCOM report underscores a pivotal moment for the healthcare industry. While AI holds immense promise, realizing its full potential will require overcoming substantial hurdles. As the sector advances, addressing these challenges will be crucial in harnessing AI to enhance medical care and drive future innovation. Malhotra’s vision and leadership will be instrumental in navigating this transformative journey.
