India’s fiscal deficit in Apr-Aug period of FY24 stands at Rs 6.43L cr

New Delhi, Sep 29 (FN Agency) The central government’s fiscal deficit during April-August period of fiscal 2023-24 stood at Rs 6.43 lakh crore or 36% of the annual Budget estimate, data released by Controller General of Accounts (CGA) showed on Friday. Fiscal deficit or difference between government’s total revenue and expenditure in April-August period of FY23 had stood at Rs 5.42 lakh crore or 32.6% of the Budget estimate. The government’s fiscal deficit is estimated at Rs 17.86 lakh crore in FY24. The Centre’s total receipts were Rs 10.29 lakh crore in April-August period of the current fiscal while total expenditure during the same period was Rs 16.72 lakh crore.

Total revenue receipts in the five-month period of FY24 were Rs 10.14 lakh crore. This included tax revenue of Rs 8.04 lakh crore and non-tax revenue of Rs 2.10 lakh crore. As per the official data, the government’s capital expenditure (capex) in April-August period of FY24 was Rs 3.74 lakh crore or 37.4% of the annual target. In the same period last year, the Centre’s capex had stood at Rs 2.52 lakh crore. The higher capex shows the government’s continued focus on infrastructure building in the country.
