Kolkata, Dec 21 (Agency) Eastern Railway’s Sealdah division has completed the construction of 10 Limited Height Subways (LHS) in a record time of 5 weeks in the Krishnanagar – Lalgola section. This strategic initiative is part of Indian Railway’s mission to eliminate level crossings systematically to enhance safety across its network, an ER spokesman said. The project, sanctioned in February 2023, witnessed 12 manned level crossings being replaced by LHS. The first block, conducted on November 19, 2023, marked the insertion of two LHS near level crossing No. 172, showcasing the Eastern Railway’s commitment to minimizing disruptions with a 10-hour traffic and power block. The success continued with subsequent blocks every weekend, inserting LHS at various locations, including LC 139, 109, 88, 89, 84A, 86, 65, and 79.
A distinctive aspect of the project was the simultaneous execution of two blocks on the same day. The project includes infrastructure improvements such as U Troughs, full-cover sheds, Pumping Houses with drainage systems, CCTV cameras, and digital water level monitoring instruments. These additions underline Eastern Railway’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure and ensuring the safety and security of both train passengers and road users. “With a substantial investment of 42 Crores, this project signifies the railway’s dedication to safety, punctuality, and contemporary standards. The completion of these 10 Limited Height Subways not only eliminates two manned level crossings but also results in manpower savings and, most importantly, enhances the safety of the entire region”. He further added that the Eastern Railway’s Sealdah Division takes pride in achieving this significant milestone, contributing to the overarching goal of a safer and more efficient railway network,” said ER CPRO Kausik Mitra.
