Delhi govt to create eco-park to sort city’s E-waste

New Delhi, Feb 24 (FN Representative) Delhi Government will set up an e-waste eco-park in the national capital to manage the mammoth electronic waste the city collects, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced on Thursday. A 20 acre of land has been demarcated for the project where the e-waste will undergo dismantling, refurbishing, recycling and re-manufacturing, he added. The city government expects to cut pollution with the initiative, which it claims to be the first in the country. According to the officials, Delhi generates 2 lakh tonnes of E-waste annually. “Our project will adopt globally recognised and adopted safe practices to sort electronic waste scientifically. While it is being done privately on a smaller scale, those units do not exercise safe and scientific methods which lead up to hazards like fire incidents,” Sisodia said. “The Delhi government is the first one to start this project.

No other state has started working on this yet. During the meeting, the cabinet has approved the proposal and a consultant for the same will be appointed soon,” he added. Sisodia also said that the eco-park will have an authorised refurbishing market as a secondary product sale market for electronic goods, batteries, chargers, laptops, PC and mobiles. “Collection centres across 12 zones will be set up to channelize e-waste. Eco-park will provide infrastructure, training and tools to the operators in the informal sector to groom them as formal recyclers,” he added. The eco-park will also provide infrastructure, training and tools to the operators in the informal sector to groom them as formal recyclers, Sisodia added further.
