New Delhi, Sep 5 (FN Agency) The Delhi government will construct separate lanes for buses and goods transport in its project to redesign and beautify 540 kilometre-long roads in the national capital according to European standards, Minister Satyendar Jain said on Saturday. In a meeting with the department officials convened earlier in the day, Jain took a stock of the ongoing. He asked the officials there to include separate lanes for city buses on 540 km length of roads identified for street-scaping, a release shared by the PWD department said.
The minister also directed the officials to start removing illegal parking and encroachments from the non operated bus stops identified on the routes. “We are planning to redesign and decongest 540 km length of roads in Delhi. For this, we will make separate lanes for buses and goods transport on roads. This will decongest the roads and ease the flow of traffic. People will be made aware of the benefits of having bus lanes and problems that arise from the encroachment of bus lanes for parking vehicles,” the release quoted Jain. The aim of the Kejriwal government’s ambitious project is to redevelop and beautify the roads of Delhi, punctuating them with sufficient utilities and facilities in line with the standards of European cities, it added.
The government is redesigning 540 km long roads spread out in nine stretches. These nine roads are — Sri Aurobindo Marg, a stretch from Majlis Park to Azadpur, K.N. Katju Marg, Road no 58 near Leela Hotel, ShantiVan road, Road opposite India Habitat Centre, Tikri Border Entry, Road no 59 near Signature Bridge and Nelson Mandela Marg. According to the government, these roads will be designed and developed keeping the aesthetics of their surroundings in mind. Bicycle lanes, plantations, selfie points, parklets and artwork will be incorporated into the roads to be designed and beautified in the coming days, it had stated earlier. The government has revamped the 800-metre-long Chirag Delhi-Sheikh Sarai stretch under a trial for the project. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had inaugurated the road last month.
