Bengaluru, Aug 13 (FN Agency) The 63rd edition of the prestigious Subroto Cup International Football Tournament, a cornerstone event in Indian football, commenced with the opening match of the Sub Junior Boys (U-15) category at the ASC Centre South Football Ground here on Tuesday. The tournament, organised annually by the Subroto Mukerjee Sports Education Society (SMSES) under the aegis of the Air Force Sports Control Board, Indian Air Force, has been a significant platform for nurturing young football talent in India since its inception in 1960. Conceived in 1958 by the late Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee, the first Chief of the Indian Air Force, the Subroto Cup was established to promote football at the grassroots level across India.
This year, Bengaluru plays host to the Sub Junior Boys (U-15) category from August 19 to 28. The matches are being held at four venues: ASC Centre South Football Ground, Air Force School Jalahalli, Air Force School Yelahanka, and the Headquarters Training Command Football Ground. A total of 37 teams are competing in this category, showcasing their football skills in front of selectors, fans, and the broader football community. Lt Gen Basant Kumar Repswal, Commandant of the ASC Centre and College, inaugurated the tournament today at ASC Centre South, where the opening match was played. Daily matches will continue at the various venues, with the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final match to be held at the ASC Centre South.The final, scheduled for August 28, will see Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor, AOC-in-C, Training Command, presiding as the Chief Guest.
Throughout its six-decade history, the Subroto Cup has been instrumental in the growth and spread of football in India.
