Bengaluru, Aug 7 (FN Agency) In a strategic move to boost state revenue, the Karnataka government has extended the operational hours for hotels, shops, bars, and licensed establishments within the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits to 1 AM daily. This decision, announced by the State Urban Development Department on July 29, aims to support the state’s ambitious commitment to funding five major poll guarantees. The five guarantees, a cornerstone of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s electoral promises, are expected to cost the state approximately Rs 55,000 crore annually. The extension of business hours is seen as a crucial step in generating the additional revenue needed to fulfill these commitments.
During his 2024-2025 budget speech, CM Siddaramaiah outlined the plan to extend operating hours for commercial establishments in Bengaluru and ten other corporation areas to bolster trade and commerce. However, the current notification specifically applies to establishments within the BBMP limits. The extended hours will enable various licensed establishments, including clubs, hotels, bars, and restaurants, to serve food and liquor until 1 AM. The government anticipates that the increased business activity will result in higher tax revenues, aiding the implementation of the five guarantees, which focus on various social welfare and development programs. As Bengaluru gears up for extended nightlife, authorities emphasize the importance of strict adherence to safety and legal guidelines. The collaboration between the government and business owners will be vital to ensure a smooth transition and the successful realization of the state’s financial goals.
