EAM Jaishankar holds talks with visiting Thai FM

New Delhi, July 12 (FN Agency) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday held talks with visiting Thailand Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa about intensifying the bilateral engagement in the political, defence, security and trade and investment spheres. In a post on X, the EAM said the two sides also exchanged views on regional matters, India-ASEAN, Indo-Pacific and cooperation in the UN. “Delighted to hold talks with Thailand’s Foreign Minister @AmbPoohMaris. As a maritime neighbour, we have civilizational bonds and shared interests. “Good discussion on our intensifying engagement covering political, defence & security, trade & investment, physical & financial connectivity, tourism and people to people domains. “Also exchanged views on regional matters, India-ASEAN, Indo-Pacific and cooperation in the UN.”

The Thai FM was here to participate in the 2nd BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers Retreat. Earlier this month, India and Thailand kicked off the 13th India-Thailand joint military exercise MAITREE at Fort Vachiraprakan in Tak province of Thailand from July 1 – 15. The Indian Ministry of Defence said its army contingent, comprising 76 personnel, is being represented mainly by a Battalion of the Ladakh Scouts along with personnel from other arms and services. The Royal Thailand Army contingent also comprises 76 personnel. The exercise aims to foster military cooperation between Thailand and India, and enhance combined capabilities in executing Joint Counter Insurgency/ Terrorist Operations in Jungle and Urban Environment under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.
