Aizawl, June 6 (Agency) Mizoram Police seized Rs. 5.57 crore worth heroin from Mizoram-Myanmar border Champhai on Thursday and arrested a 42-year-old resident of Indo-Myanmar border trade centre Zokhawthar village for alleged trafficking and possession of the contraband, police said. State police officials stationed at Chalbawia junction police check-gate at Khankawn in Champhai’s western outskirt during random checking detected and seized 1.902 kg heroin concealed in 156 soap cases from an i10 car. Driver of the vehicle, Lalnunpuia (42) of Zokhawthar, currently staying in Aizawl was arrested. Investigations are on to ascertain if Lalnunpuia is the owner of the seized heroin or merely the mule in smuggling of the contraband from Myanmar.
A criminal case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 was registered at Champhai Police Station and the suspect was produced before the special court (ND and PS Act) in Champhai district. Meanwhile, State Excise and Narcotics Department officials seized 985 grams of heroin from three localities in Aizawl city on Wednesday. Three persons – Lalbuatsaihi (35), Lalmuansanga (23) and Lalsangliana (43), all of residents of Aizawl were arrested for alleged possession of the drugs, excise and narcotics department spokesperson Peter Zohmingthanga said on Thursday. The three accused were booked under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and were produced before the court of special judge (ND and PS Act) on Thursday.
