Hyderabad, Apr 20 (Agency) In light of the alarming increase in cancer cases attributed to the widespread use of fertilisers and pesticides in vegetable cultivation, the Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FTCCI) convened a Workshop on Rooftop Kitchen Gardening on Saturday at its Red Hill premises in the city. The workshop aimed to raise awareness about the importance of cultivating food organically and provided a platform for enthusiasts to learn the basics of Rooftop Kitchen Gardening. Addressing the attendees, Ravi Kumar, Vice President of FTCCI, highlighted how rooftop kitchen gardening contributes to reducing urban heat, and pollution, and promotes cleaner air.
Chandra Mohan Siram, Chairman of the Agro & Food Processing Committee, underscored the concerning trend of escalating pesticide usage. He pointed out that decades ago, before the green revolution, pesticides were rarely used. However, today, a single farmer applies 50 to 60 bags of pesticides per acre, with multiple sprays on every vegetable crop to enhance appearance and freshness, ultimately contributing to the rise in cancer cases. He emphasized the urgent need to shift towards organic farming practices, citing examples from countries like Israel and Kenya.
Ms K Sridevi, Assistant Director of Horticulture (Urban Farming), Government of Telangana, advised participants not to engage in rooftop kitchen gardening due to peer pressure but rather for the joy of producing pure vegetables and promoting family health. She highlighted the wealth of information available online for guidance. B Manga and K Synitha Rose, both officers in Urban Farming, elaborated on the significance of urban farming, cultural practices, and organic pest control methods. They urged citizens to utilize balcony and rooftop spaces effectively for gardening, reclaiming Hyderabad’s status as a green city from its current concrete jungle.
