Gangtok, Oct 10 (FN Bureau) The huge destruction caused by the South Lhonak Glacial Lake Outburst Flood has created apprehension about the possibility of more such disasters in the near future in Sikkim, prompting the state government to request ISRO for surveillance over trouble spots.Chief Secretary V B Pathak on Monday, virtually participating in a conference with senior central government officials, apprised them about the steps being taken to deal with the aftermath of the flood in the state. To prevent further catastrophe, the government has requested the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for surveillance over South Lhonak and Shako Chu Lakes. Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba during the meeting called for increasing the number of helicopters delivering ration and evacuating stranded people, particularly in North Sikkim speedily.
He assured releasing the second instalment of National Disaster Response and State Disaster Response force fund. “Temporary restoration is carried out, to begin with, to connect the completely cut-off areas with the rest of the State. Restoration of new roads and bridges will take a longer duration. Bailey bridges and footbridges are being put up with the cooperation of the Army and Central agencies by the state,” said Pathak. The flooding has completely destroyed the Indian Army ammunition depot at Munshithang. This has filled the Teesta River basin with weapons, ammunition and explosives, making it difficult to clear the debris. Controlled detonation is being carried out by army wherever necessary.
