Chennai, July 13 (Bureau) Registering his firm opposition to the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) as suggested by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M.K.Stalin on Thursday said UCC poses a serious threat and challenges the diverse social structure of the society. In a Demi-Official letter to the Law Commission of India Chairman, he expressed the Tamil Nadu government’s strong opposition to the idea of implementation of the UCC in India that is known for its multi-cultural social fabric. Citing Constitutional safeguards, cultural and religious pluralism, Federal strcuture, social cohesion, historical context, minority rights, socio-economic implications and harmonious co-existence, he said the UCC, as it stands, lacks widespread consultation and engagement with the State Governments, religious leaders and community representatives which was crucial to arrive at a well rounded and acceptable solution.
Mr Stalin urged the Law Commission Chairman to consider these concerns seriously and drop the proposal to proceed with the UCC. “We should aim for uniformity in rights and opportunities for all people rather than uniformity on laws”, he said. “We need to acknowledge the fundamental principle that uniformity will not lead to unity and progress in a country brimming with diversity. Our nation’s strength lies in its diversity, and we must uphold and celebrate it rather than attempting to homogenize it through the UCC”, he added.
