Amid UCC row, Tuki writes to Rijiju requesting for information & feedback

Itanagar, July 7 (FN Agency) Amid the ongoing political storm over the Uniform Civil Code controversy with the Opposition parties opposing the Narendra Modi-led Central Government’s push for UCC implementation, former Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister and State Congress president Nabam Tuki on Thursday requested Union Minister of Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju to shed light on the issue of UCC and its potential implications on the tribal-dominated North Eastern states. Expressing his trepidation on the matter, Tuki, also the Chairman of North East Congress Coordination Committee (NECCC), shot off a letter to Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, requesting for information and feedback from him pertaining to implications of UCC in North Eastern states and the tribals of the country as a whole.

A Uniform Civil Code means that all sections of the society irrespective of their religion shall be treated equally according to a national civil code, which shall be applicable to all uniformly, covering areas like marriage, divorce, maintenance, inheritance, adoption and succession of the property. “We all see a lot of discussion going on (about) Uniform Civil Code in media platforms after govt push for same in last few days. You had been Union Cabinet Minister Law and would be fully aware of its implications on North East and Tribal communities as well as smaller minorities like Buddhists, Christians and others who have been since centuries following customary local laws. I would request you to give us your valuable information and feedback on the matter of UCC implications for the North Eastern States and Tribal of the country,” Tuki said in his letter to Rijiju, the Lok Sabha MP from Arunachal West constituency.
