Chandigarh, May 24 (Agency) A consumer activist, in a complaint to RBI governor, has alleged that some private banks were ‘not adhering to the RBI guidelines at Chandigarh while exchangng Rs 2000 denomination currency notes.. In an email to the apex bank’s governor Shaktikanta Das, Dr Ajay Jagga alleged that even after Das, in an interview, aired on most TV channels, clarified that no ID or form was required,in exchaning the notes, some private banks in Chandigarh were forcing people to fill a form and asking for an identity card like AAdhaar.
Jagga, who is an ex-member of Distt. Consumer Protection Council, an NGO, alleged that private banks like Yes Bank, Indusind Bank, Axis Bank and ICICI Bank along with a public sector bank like Indian Bank were forcing people to fill up a form and asking for AAdhar Card claiming that they had not got instructions from their authorities. He has requested the RBI governor to kindly convey the guidelines in strict terms to ensure the public was not harassed by the banks. Tuesday was the first day for currency exchange in banks. RBI, on Friday last, announced its decision to withdraw Rs 2000 denomination banknotes from circulation.
