New Delhi, Sep 21 (FN Agency) In yet another significant decision which would restore faith and accountability in the Supreme Court among the public, Chief Justice UU Lalit has decided to start live streaming from September 27 of its proceedings starting with a five-judge constitution bench, on priority basis. The decision was taken in a full court meeting on Tuesday which was convened in the afternoon by the CJI. The decision of the meeting was unanimous and the hearings will initially be telecast live on YouTube. “To begin with, only some specific cases or cases of constitutional and national importance being argued for final hearing before the Constitution Bench be live streamed as a pilot project. “For that, permission of the concerned Court will have to be sought in writing, in advance, in conformity with the prescribed procedure,” sources said.
The judges were of the unanimous opinion that this step of live streaming of Constitution bench cases would be a first step towards implementation of the SC’s 2018 judgment for live streaming of its proceedings. The meeting also was convened to finalise and discuss on the four judges vacancies in the Supreme Court. However, a final conclusion / decision on the recommendations of appointment of these four judges names could not be finalised in the meeting. At present, the Supreme Court is hearing important constitutional matters including the constitutional validity of the reservation for Economically Weaker Section (EWS).Soon, others are slated to begin: Bohra community’s right to excommunicate, Bhopal Gas tragedy compensation, retrospective application of immunity against arrest, validity of All India Bar Examination and extent of Supreme Court’s powers to directly hear cases.
