Centre will give all help for flood-hit: Himanta

New Delhi, June 24 (Agency) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the Centre will continue to provide all possible assistance required for a flood-hit state. Sarma made the statement after he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate, Droupadi Murmu, filed her nomination papers for the Presidential election. “We met Modiji and discussed certain issues (related to states). Yesterday, the Prime Minister also tweeted elaborately about Assam floods. The government of India will continue to provide all possible assistance that are required,” he told reporters at the Assam House here. Asked whether he has sought a ‘special package’ for Assam, the Chief Minister said: “We don’t need any ‘package’ as the government is extending all possible help.

After the water recedes, we will know (the damages caused) and then we will require a package.” Earlier this week, Leader of Opposition in Assam, Debabrata Saikia, demanded the Modi government should immediately release Rs 20,000 crore as special Central relief to alleviate the damages caused by flood and erosion in Assam. Several districts of the State are affected by floods caused due to incessant rainfall. Sarma, who is also the convenor of BJP-led North-East democratic Alliance (NEDA), dodged the question on whether he discussed the Maharashtra political crisis. Several MLAs from Maharashtra, including Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde, are staying at a hotel in Guwahati amid political turmoil in the state.
