Tony Awards 2022: ‘A Strange Loop’, ‘The Lehman Trilogy’, ‘Take Me Out’, ‘Company’ are top winners

New York, June 13 (Representative) This year’s 75th Tony Awards were held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. After two difficult pandemic years, the three-hour-long webcasted event honoured some great and powerful stage performances of plays and musicals on Broadway, with “A Strange Loop”, “The Lehman Trilogy”, “Take Me Out“ and “Company” winning the top prizes at the 2022 Tony Awards. ‘Strange Loop’, captured the night, dominating with 11 nominations and bringing home two wins, for best musical and best book of a musical. ‘A Strange Loop’‘s star-studded producers declared winners, with Jennifer Hudson achieving EGOT (Emmy, Grammy Oscar and Tony) status. “Company,” which flipped the gender of the protagonist of Stephen Sondheim’s classic musical to tell a more feminist female-focused story, earned five prizes. Its victory was bittersweet however, as it came seven to eight months after its creator died at the age of 91. “The Lehman Trilogy” won for best play and took home another four awards, with director Sam Mendes, another Hollywood Tony winner Sunday night, winning for best direction of a play and actor Simon Russell Beale winning for his leading role in the production about the rise and fall of Lehman Brothers. Other winners included the musical for the late king of pop Michael Jackson, “MJ”which received ten nominations and won four, while Joaquina Kalukango won best performance by an actress in a leading role in a musical for “Paradise Square”.

Phylicia Rashad won best performance by an actress in a featured role in a play for her work in “Skeleton Crew” while “Take Me Out” won for best revival of a play with Jesse Tyler Ferguson winning the award for the featured production.
