Ottawa, June 10 (Agency) Canada disbursed on Thursday a 1 billion Canadian dollars loan ($788 million) via the IMF’s administered account for Ukraine, which it promised in its 2022 budget. “Today, the government disbursed a $1B loan, first announced in the budget, through the IMF’s Administered Account for Ukraine to support Ukraine’s financial stability and economic resilience,” Finance Canada said. In its 2022 budget, Canada said it was contributing to Ukraine’s economy a total 2.8 billion Canadian dollars in form of direct contributions and loans to Kiev authorities.
“Canada has announced more than $1.2 billion in direct contributions in support of Ukraine and its people in 2022, in addition to an offer of up to $1.6 billion in loan support for the Ukrainian government,” section 5.2, Chapter 5 of Budget 2022, reads. The budget also pledged to provide Ukraine with 500 million Canadian dollars in extra assistance in 2022-2023. Since the start of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine, Canada has strongly supported Ukraine. Ottawa has been one of Moscow’s most vocal opponents and critics, while also becoming one of the main financial contributors to the Zelenskyy government. On top of the financial assistance, Ottawa has also provided military assistance and weaponry. Nearly 33,000 military personnel and paramilitary forces, including the Azov battalion, have been trained by Canadian instructors.
